Rehabilitation of Kelana Jaya Lake through Community Participation

Kelana Jaya Lakes are prominent urban lakes in Selangor, Malaysia. Located in Damansara River Basin, the lakes were developed as a Public Park that provides tranquility and enjoyment to people from all walks of life from the hustle and bustle of city life. Nonetheless, these intangible benefits have been diminishing purely due to continuous pollution by the surrounding areas at a very consistent rate.
As the result, a rehabilitation program was initiated in 2002. The first phase of the program was about community awareness and empowering the community to participate in conserving the lakes’ ecosystem and its biodiversity. Consequently, the program has managed to generate positive responses from the community and has established Friends of Kelana Jaya Park in 2005.
The effort of rehabilitating Kelana Jaya Lakes has not stopped here. In August 2007, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) under an Innofund Scheme, funded the 2nd phase of the Kelana Jaya Rehabilitation Programme known as Rehabilitation of Kelana Jaya Lake through Community Participation. This project aims at improving the water quality of one of the lakes (Lake 1) in its very own way by collaborating between technology and human resources. It emphasizes on the involvement of the local community in lake management alongside with an innovative technology called the Ecofan. Visit the project website: www.kelanajayapark.com

It would be more meaningful if somethng is said about the visit, eg. positive and negaitve comments on the Geopark that will be of relevance to the Kelana Jaya Park.The photos should be of interest to visitors to our blog and not only to the handsome faces in the photos!

Hopefully your trip to Tok Bali could help us to bring up the important issue of maintaining the water body at the estuary of the river. Of paramount importance is maintaining the quality of the water itself.
